If you’ve wondered what life was really like for some of the world’s best outdoor photographers, the below video from National Geographic is a good place to start.

The two-minute clip is a trailer for a new series called Photographer featuring, among others, Wild Eye cover photographer Paul Nicklen.

The six-part docuseries, which is on the National Geographic channel and also streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, is directed by Academy and Emmy Award-winning filmmakers E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin.

“’Photographer’ flips the lens on some of the world’s most extraordinary visual storytellers to see what makes them click,” National Geographic said.

“’Photographer’ takes us on a journey with the world’s most extraordinary visual storytellers, pairing them with today’s leading documentary filmmakers for an exhilarating and dynamic international adventure.”

Each hour-long episode focuses on an iconic photographer including one on Paul Nicklen and his partner Cristina Mittermeier, who will also be featured in a forthcoming issue of Wild Eye.

Other photographers showcased in the series include Krystle Wright, an outdoor photographer who also shoots extreme sports; Anand Varma, who captures wildlife and insects; conflict photographer Muhammed Muheisen; fashion photographer Campbell Addy; and celebrated portrait photographer Dan Winters.

“Through vérité footage of their current mission interwoven with interviews and archived footage, viewers will gain a deeper understanding of each photographer’s process, learn how they became an artist, and discover how they see and experience the world,” National Geographic said.

In addition to Vasarhelyi and Chin, episodes of Photographer will be directed by Marshall Curry (“Racing Dreams”), Pagan Harleman (“The Trade”), Crystal Kayiza (“Rest Stop”), Sam Pollard (“MLK/FBI”), Kristi Jacobson (“Solitary”) and Rita Baghdadi (“Sirens”),

“’Photographer’ is a testament to National Geographic’s commitment to delivering groundbreaking narratives that spark curiosity, leaving a lasting impact on our viewers,” said Tom McDonald, executive vice president, Global Factual and Unscripted Content.

“The intentional pairing of these visionary directors with each respective photographer captures the essence of their creativity and showcases the extraordinary lengths they go to redefine the boundaries of visual storytelling.”
