How nature sculpts masterpieces from sand, light, and time.

My first time photographing sand dunes was a disaster. This was before I learned to embrace patterns and simplicity in my images. I went looking for grand landscapes. What I came home with were photographs of big piles of sand.

That was 30 years ago, and thankfully I’ve been able to return to the sand over and over. Over time, I learned to look beyond the dunes themselves and see the extraordinary lines, curves, and patterns that make them so beautiful.

Returning to the same dune field doesn’t mean returning to the same landscape. Sand dunes are constantly changing creations, moving, forming, and reforming.

The sand itself has a fascinating history. Sometimes it’s the last remnants of an ancient ocean. Sometimes it’s the result of millions of years of weather slowly chipping away at mountains.

Once the sand is deposited, the wind becomes the sculptor. Night after night, the wind etches new lines, softens old ones, and creates delicate patterns in the sand. This is why photographers like me love them. Every dawn can reveal new designs, courtesy of the overnight winds.

After the wind finishes, light takes over. Before sunrise, the light is gentle, and photographs feel soft and dreamy. As the sun rises, shadows appear, initially long and soft, then gradually shorten and sharpen, turning simple shapes into striking abstract compositions.

And then, as the sun climbs higher, much of that visual drama disappears. The sand hasn’t changed, but the artwork has.

This art show restarts every morning. Countless grains of sand have danced in the overnight wind and settled into a quiet reminder of how extraordinary our planet is.
